Two Notts medical practices require improvement
Two Nottinghamshire medical practices have been rated as requiring improvement following a inspections.
The Practice St Albans, in Hucknall Lane, and Sherwood Rise Medical Centre in Nottingham Road have fallen below the required standard. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said that the Sherwood Rise Medical Practice required improvement when it was inspected in November 2014 – and it was judged to still require improvement when its latest inspection report was released on March 27.
The practice, which provides primary medical services to 5,700 patients, was built in 1986.
Professor Steve Field, chief inspector of General Practice, who carried out the inspection, said: “Staff understood and fulfilled their responsibilities to raise concerns, and to report incidents and near misses. However, reviews and investigations were not always sufficiently detailed to ensure events did not re-occur.
“Some risks to patients were assessed and managed; however, the practice was not operating effective systems to ensure they had assessed all identifiable risks.”
However, data collected by the CQC showed that patient outcomes were in line with local and national averages and evidence demonstrated the practice had made improvements to the level of care provided to their patients.
The majority of patients also said they were treated with compassion, dignity and respect and they were involved in decisions about their treatment.
CQC inspectors also raised concerns about The Practice St Albans doctor’s surgery when inspections were carried out in April and December 2016. The outcomes for patients with long-term conditions were found to be below local and national averages and the practice was rated as requires improvement for the care of people experiencing poor mental health including people with dementia.
Prof Field also stated: “The monitoring of fridges used for the storage of medicines and the checking of out of date dressings required strengthening but this did not create a risk to patients.
“Patients said they were treated with compassion and dignity, and staff were supportive and respectful in providing care, involving them in care and decisions about their treatment. “Patients told us they were usually able to get an appointment with a GP when they needed one, with urgent appointments available on the same day. However, it could take a long time to get through to reception by phone. The practice had implemented an action plan to improve. ”
Both practices will be re-inspected within six months. If the services fail to make sufficient improvements, and are still rated as inadequate they could be placed into special measures.
Being placed into special measures represents a decision by CQC that a service has to improve within six months to avoid CQC taking steps to cancel the provider’s registration.
A spokeswoman for the The Practice St Albans said: “We were very disappointed to receive a ‘requires improvement’ from the CQC. We did appeal the findings of the report but unfortunately, this was without success.
“Three out of the five areas assessed by the CQC were rated as ‘good’ with two being rated as ‘requires improvement’. No area assessed by the CQC was rated inadequate. The practice does not believe that any patients have or will be put at risk as a result of the findings of the report.
“Plans have already been put in place to address areas highlighted as requiring improvement; for example, our final QOF score for this year was 90.9 per cent (compared to last year’s result of 85.9 per cent, as stated within the report). We are also reviewing our telephone systems to increase access to the surgery and patient satisfaction rates.”
